WOMEN OUTDOORS BIBLIOGRAPHY Rev. 6/06

About this bibliography.

The books I have included are mainly by women authors and focus on adventure travel, nature study and wilderness and country living. Books are listed by author and title and cross-indexed under three headings: Location, Sport, and Topic. Annotations of books that have been reviewed, including those that are not recommended, are listed alphabetically by author in the master list at the end, with some exceptions. Children's Books, Children's Activities, Honorable Mention (especially good books by men) most How To books and Reference books are listed and reviewed separately under Topic and not included in the master list or cross indexed. Reviews are mostly by JB = Jan Brown and are admittedly quite subjective! Reviews of a few books by others are also included and attributed. Books that are especially recommended are marked *. Because I have found that I disagree with many mainstream reviewers, I'll state my biases! Books marked * are well written, and the women are competent, generally optimistic and uncomplaining, and interested and empathetic with the people and cultures they visit. They are not unaware of their inner feelings, but don't make introspection the focus of their writings.

I would especially like to acknowledge the extensive bibliographies compiled by Arlene Blum in Annapurna and Judith Niemi in Rivers Running Free and for Women in the Wilderness and Woodswoman, which have led me to discover a number of fine books. Many others have also contributed to the listings, especially Ruth Grant, Donna Horn and Caroline Schimmel.
